When we experience stress, the body shifts into survival mode. The brain signals the release of stress hormones such as adrenaline and cortisol, preparing the body for a potential threat — the classic fight-or-flight response.
In the short term, this response is protective. It increases alertness, raises heart rate and directs energy toward muscles so we can respond quickly.
But during this survival state, the body temporarily de-prioritises other important processes such as digestion, hormone balance, immunity and healing.
When stress becomes chronic, the nervous system may remain in this heightened state for long periods of time. Over time this can disrupt multiple systems in the body — including gut health, metabolism and hormonal balance.
Midlife hormonal shifts can make the nervous system even more sensitive to these stress signals, which is why many women begin noticing these symptoms more strongly during this stage of life.
How Chronic Stress Affects the Body
When the nervous system remains under chronic stress, the body’s natural regulatory rhythms can begin to change. One example is the daily cortisol rhythm.
Under healthy conditions, cortisol rises in the morning to help us wake up and feel alert during the day. As evening approaches, cortisol naturally declines while melatonin rises, allowing the body to prepare for sleep.
With prolonged stress, this rhythm can become disrupted. Instead of having healthy cortisol levels during the day, many people begin to feel sluggish and fatigued. Then in the evening — when cortisol should be dropping — the body may experience a stress hormone spike.

Hormones such as oestrogen and progesterone play a much larger role in the nervous system than many people realise.
Oestrogen helps regulate several important brain functions. It supports the production and activity of neurotransmitters such as serotonin and dopamine, which influence mood, motivation and emotional stability. Oestrogen also helps the brain use glucose efficiently, which supports energy and cognitive clarity. Progesterone also plays an important role in nervous system balance. It has a calming effect on the brain through its interaction with GABA receptors — the brain’s primary inhibitory system that helps quiet neural activity and promote relaxation.
As hormone levels begin to fluctuate during perimenopause and menopause, this natural buffering effect on the nervous system can decrease. As a result, the brain may become more sensitive to stress signals. This is one reason midlife can feel like a tipping point for many women.

Many of the symptoms women experience in midlife can be linked to a nervous system under chronic load.
Some of the most common signs include:

When the body is under chronic stress, energy is directed toward survival rather than digestion. As a result, digestive processes can become less efficient.
Over time this can affect the gut microbiome, the complex community of bacteria that supports digestion, immune function and even neurotransmitter production.
When the microbiome becomes disrupted, inflammation within the digestive system may increase. Some people begin to notice greater food sensitivities, bloating or digestive discomfort. Because the gut and brain communicate constantly through the gut–brain axis, disturbances in gut health can also influence mood, stress resilience and cognitive function.
Toxin Load and Systemic Inflammation
Another factor that can increase stress on the body is toxic load.
The liver plays a central role in processing and eliminating toxins, metabolic waste products and used hormones from the body. When the liver becomes overburdened, these substances may circulate longer in the body than intended. This can contribute to systemic inflammation, which affects multiple systems — including the brain.
Inflammation in the brain can contribute to symptoms such as brain fog, cognitive fatigue and difficulty concentrating.

• restore healthier sleep rhythms
• improve digestion
• support emotional steadiness
Over time, these small signals of safety allow the nervous system to rebuild resilience.
Midlife can sometimes feel like your body has suddenly changed in ways you don’t fully understand.
