Stress is a normal and necessary part of life.

In short bursts, the body’s stress response helps us react quickly to challenges and keep ourselves safe. However, when stress continues for long periods without adequate recovery, the nervous system can remain in a state of ongoing activation.

Over time, this can begin to affect many systems in the body, including sleep, digestion, hormones and energy levels.

For many women in midlife, the effects of chronic stress become more noticeable as hormonal changes make the nervous system more sensitive.

The Body’s Stress Response

When the brain perceives a threat, the nervous system activates the sympathetic stress response.

This triggers the release of stress hormones such as:

• adrenaline
• cortisol

These hormones prepare the body for action by:

• increasing heart rate
• raising blood sugar
• sharpening alertness
• redirecting energy toward survival

At the same time, systems that are not immediately needed for survival — such as digestion, reproduction and long-term repair — temporarily slow down.

This response is often described as fight or flight.

The stress response is designed to be temporary.

After a stressful event has passed, the nervous system should shift back into a calmer parasympathetic state, where the body can rest, digest and recover.
