There are times in life when something difficult is happening, and joy can feel almost out of place.
You might find yourself laughing and then suddenly remember what you’re carrying.
You might have a beautiful day, enjoy yourself, feel connected to someone you love — and then wonder whether you should really be feeling happy when something else in your life feels painful.
Perhaps you’ve even thought: I shouldn’t be enjoying myself right now.
But what if you don’t have to choose?
What if difficult emotions and moments of joy can exist alongside each other?
You don’t have to stay in the difficult feeling
When something hurts, it’s natural to give it our attention.
We may need to acknowledge it.
We may need to feel it.
We may need time to process what has happened.
But that doesn’t mean we have to stay in that feeling every moment.
A difficult experience doesn’t take away your capacity to laugh.
It doesn’t mean you can’t enjoy a beautiful day.
It doesn’t mean you can’t feel love, connection, peace or even a little bit of fun.
You can be carrying something difficult and still have moments that feel good.
And perhaps those moments don’t diminish what you’re feeling.
Perhaps they simply remind you that there is more than one thing happening inside you.
Joy isn’t pretending everything is okay
There is a difference between allowing joy and forcing yourself to be positive.
I’m not talking about telling yourself to look on the bright side.
I’m not talking about pushing sadness away.
And I’m not suggesting that you need to find a lesson or a silver lining in something painful.
Sometimes life is simply difficult.
But if a moment of joy appears, perhaps you don’t need to push that away either.
You can let yourself laugh.
You can enjoy the sunshine.
You can spend time in nature.
You can listen to music you love.
You can be with people who make you feel good.
You can enjoy your animals.
You can dance.
You can simply have a moment where life feels light.
You don’t have to explain it.
You don’t have to justify it.
You can just let yourself experience it.
What brings you a sense of peace?
Sometimes the things that soothe us are surprisingly simple.
Nature.
Fresh air.
Green spaces.
Animals.
A gentle breeze.
Sunshine.
The sound of birds.
Being with friends.
Music.
Movement.
There is something beautiful about noticing the things that naturally bring a little more ease into your experience.
Not because they make the difficult thing disappear.
But because they give you somewhere else to be for a while.
What makes you feel alive?
This is a question worth sitting with.
What makes you feel alive?
Not what should make you happy.
Not what looks good from the outside.
Not what you think you ought to enjoy.
What genuinely brings something alive in you?
Perhaps it’s being outside.
Perhaps it’s your animals.
Perhaps it’s music.
Perhaps you love to dance.
Perhaps it’s spending time with people who make you laugh.
Perhaps it’s creating something.
Perhaps it’s simply sitting somewhere beautiful with a cup of tea and having nowhere else you need to be.
Your answer doesn’t have to be profound.
It might be something very ordinary.
And that is okay.

You may need to make room for those things again
Life can become full of things that need to be done.
Work.
Family.
Responsibilities.
Appointments.
Decisions.
The everyday business of keeping life moving.
And sometimes the things that bring us joy become quieter.
Not because we don’t love them anymore.
They simply get pushed further down the list.
So perhaps part of coming back to yourself is remembering.
Remembering what you love.
Remembering what makes you laugh.
Remembering where you feel free.
Remembering the things that bring freshness into your life.
You don’t have to make a huge change.
You could simply bring one small piece back.
Put on the music.
Sit outside.
Spend time with your animal.
Call a friend.
Go for a walk somewhere beautiful.
Dance.
Laugh.
Let yourself enjoy something.
Let the good moments be good
Sometimes when we’re going through something difficult, we can almost rush past the good moments.
We notice them, but don’t quite allow ourselves to settle into them.
What if you stayed a little longer?
What if you noticed the warmth of the sun?
The sound of laughter?
The feeling of being with someone you love?
The peace of sitting in nature?
The simple pleasure of something you enjoy?
You don’t need to make the moment bigger than it is.
You don’t need to turn it into a practice.
Just let it be good.
You can hold both
Perhaps this is the part we sometimes forget.
You can feel sadness and still laugh.
You can experience loss and still feel love.
You can be going through something difficult and still enjoy a beautiful moment.
You don’t have to deny one feeling to make room for another.
Joy doesn’t erase what is difficult.
And allowing yourself to feel joy doesn’t mean that what matters to you matters any less.
Sometimes joy is simply a reminder that life is still here.
That there is still beauty.
Still connection.
Still laughter.
Still love.
Still a part of you that can feel free.

A gentle question to take with you
What brings you back to life?
Maybe you already know.
Maybe you’ve simply forgotten.
And perhaps you don’t need to wait for life to feel completely settled before you make a little room for it again.
A little more nature.
A little more laughter.
A little more connection.
A little more of what makes you feel like you.
Where could you bring a little of that back into your life this week?
